Watchmen (again)

Fans of the comic: See it, great adaptation

Fans of super hero movies: Please, please do not go in expecting it to be TDK again

Fans of movies in general: See it and marvel at the technological feats Zack Snyder provides for this movie, and be entertained by the beautifully choreographed fight sequences, the wonderful use of CGI, and the acting which (for the most part) does not disappoint. However, don't blame me if you don't quite understand what's going on a lot of the time.

People who wander into a midnight showing in order to hoot and holler and then complain when it's not over yet: asdgasgksabdcubsaugfboiugboasubdvodusbnuvbansouvb

  1. GEEZ, those people were so obnoxious at the midnight showing.

I was sort of disappointed in this this movie, but only for various little reasons. (Probably because the book was so good and they left out some of the better parts.) I kinda thought the fight scenes were often cartoon-y and extremely unrealistic. They added way too many sound effects to the punches and kicks, etc. Acting wise it was REALLY good and they matched each role perfectly. As a whole it was a pretty decent movie. I think I need to see it again to really appreciate though, without everyone talking and laughing during all the dramatic scenes.

Also, did they leave out the RRAAAARRL in the movie? I think they did, but I can't remember. :C

  2. The fight scenes were cartoony, yeah, but that's just Zack Snyder. It's like his signature to add in unnecessary slow-mo and overdramatic fight sequences just for the sake of looking cool.

Just like it's his signature to have very very very long sex scenes.

The only thing that seemed out of place for him to do here was his choice of music at times. The Comedian's funeral seemed so much more shallow with his choice of music he used, as well as other parts where it seemed he was trying to convey emotion through music and failing.

Although the Jimi Hendrix placement as Niteowl and Rorschach walk through the Arctic tundra did feel very badass.

  3. SO I SAW IT LAST NIGHT AS WELL!

Naturally the book was better, but i felt this was the best possible way the film could have been made while staying true with the graphic novel. I like how much of the movie was shot for shot the same as the film. During the sex scene I was sort of like wow that's pretty much like the book. I wonder if the original three and a half hour version of the film is better. One of my dislikes was that Dr. Manhattan's certain appendage did not need to be shown so much, maybe it was so obvious to me because i got stuck in the very front row maybe not.

    (Spoiler alert)
EVEN IN ARIZONA THERE WERE SO MANY JACK A**es at the movie. There were jerk nozzles laughing during the rape scene. What the heck is up with that?

I enjoyed the soundtrack but at some points it took away from the darkness and seriousness i felt from the graphic novel. Overall I enjoyed But if you want the full experience of Watchmen definitely read the book.

    p.s.
did seth rogan look alot fatter in the preview for his next film???

  4. Watched it again today, haha. :b The movie is SOOOO much better the second time around. Or maybe it was just the fact there weren't a bunch of people laughing and making comments during the sex scenes. I also liked the fight scenes a lot more the second time.

The soundtrack could have definitely been better. Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen was a bad choice for that specific scene, I thought.

Also, there was no RRAAAARRL. Very disappointing.

Alsoalso, YES Seth Rogan does look fatter, I thought that too!

  5. I think I'll be the only non-alumni to comment, which is sad.

Some parts of the soundtrack bothered me, because it was SO out of place but in some weird way it reminded me of Stanley Kubrick because the music was SO out there and SO obnoxious at times and really just being played to be in your face... I have another theory too, which is that he was just trying to make it relatable to today's crowd, and something we can all recognize easily. Or, it was just one big joke... IRONY.

The story was great, and it was a little easier to understand than the comic, which was great because i was so confused the first time i read the scene with Dr. Manhattan on Mar and the whole time and quantum physics part. They followed the dialogue really well too.

I wish they put the part with the comic book about a guy who beats the ... heck... out of sharks and adds them to his raft of assorted objects in order to float back to civilization.

The one thing i did not like at all was when the fight scenes were taking place many a bone was shown and things that make your toes curl and your face squint took place.... like an arm bone breaking through the skin in the wrong direction..... ewww... but i think that's my own personal thought. The fight scenes were great other wise.

One final thing i would like to touch on, is inside the war room with all the generals and Nixon... tell me you weren't expecting someone to say "Yes Dr.Strangelove" or "Yes Doctor Batguano" or someone with an odd name just like in Dr. Strangelove.

All in all it wasn't a bad movie. Go see it the day or two days before it goes out of the theater because the chances of the crowd being as obnoxious as they were at the midnight showing is slim to non.

  7. i believe this movie wasn't the great movie everyone thought it was, at first i hated it and thought it was too long, but if they cut anything out then the movie would of been alot worse. I thought for the lesson on character development, this movie does an amazing job going through each characrters story line, but in all the movie was too sappy, the acting was so so, the cinametagraphy was good, the fight scenes would of been better if Snyder didn't keep using the slow motion affect in every kick or punch, too long(7:30-10:30)i liked the ending, there was really no other way to end it... overall i wouldn't see the movie again, i think the movie was too highly anticipated...i didn't compare it to the dark knight one bit, hmmmm this movie made me not want to be a masked vigilanty, the only one super was the blue guy that had his penis hanging out the whole time. (awkward sex scene with him)

  8. btw miss jupiter is a sleeze...

  9. I feel like you're trolling Zander... but i respect your opinion. To each their own, right?

Sex scenes are always awkward though... More so with a blue man who can make multiple copies of himself than with an average man.

And as far as the only super being the blue guy... that's kinda how the story goes. They're just normal people who want to fight crime, hence that back story scene with NightOwl and the old guy who was writing the book "Behind the mask". It's a "batman" world, with cool gadgets and one guy who just happens to have superpowers due to a nuclear accident. Everyone else is just normal. It's kinda hard for me to explain, so i know I'm not saying it right, but it would be just like if someone wanted to be a superhero in this world. You don't NEED to have powers (batman) you just have to fight crime and wear a mask. Also, knowing how to fight would help

  10. I've been at a reunion group with the people I went to South Africa with all weekend so I haven't gotten to go see it yet. All I want you guys to tell me is: Did they leave the original ending exactly as is or did they change it at all? I had heard rumors early on that it was being changed partly.

    ReplyDelete
  11. They changed it. I'm not really sure, most people aren't. Not really my topic.

  12. The ending was changed.

    spoilers if you care

Instead of the giant squid, what blows up all of New York is just a huge bomb that Dr. Manhattan helped Ozy make without knowing what it would be used for. That way, the blame would be entirely on Dr. M and no country would at fault, thereby creating peace similar to how the giant squid did.

I thought that was stupid. I consider it incredibly hard to believe that Russia would stop any plans for attack over something caused by Manhattan, who has been under America's control for so long. It wouldn't have the same effect of uniting all of the world toward one cause like the alien squid did, because with the squid, it was something that no one could possibly blame anyone else about. It was something completely unknown to anyone, and in order to prevent something like that from happening again, all of the world would need to join together and put aside their differences.

I can't think of any good reason Snyder would choose against that aside from either lack of the CGI to do it (unlikely), or that he assumed the common audience would just think it silly to be an alien squid. To an extent, I think he might be right on that last one.

though in the movie, Ozy does name the bomb S.Q.U.I.D. in reference to it.

  13. i never, and will probably never read the graphic novel: should i see this movie or wait until the DVD release??!

  14. The ending was changed. Honestly, It had to be in order for the movie to make sense. If they left the ending the same, it just wouldn't have worked on film.

  15. Mama, i say you go see it. It's actually cheaper to see it in the theater than to rent it/buy it on DVD.

9.50 on time use VS 20 something for lifetime use.

It's your call. But if you see it in theater, you can at least not have to worry about spending more money on it later if you didn't like it.

    again, totally your call

  16. Roger Ebert gives it four stars.

"It's a compelling visceral film -- sound, images and characters combined into a decidedly odd visual experience that evokes the feel of a graphic novel. It seems charged from within by its power as a fable; we sense it’s not interested in a plot so much as with the dilemma of functioning in a world losing hope."

  17. what is trolling? i understand that they all aren't "super" heroes, the story wasn't hard to get especially with the minute men opening, which i thought was cool but overall i just don't think watchmen was for me

  18. Cass:

It's kind of a tough call. Some people who have never read the graphic novel have seen it and absolutely loved it. On the other hand, there are countless amounts of people who haven't read the gn, saw it, and thought it was complete garbage. Just look up the reviews on metacritic.

I would really just strongly recommend reading comic first, but if that's really not your thing then all I can say is to just pay attention to EVERYTHING that's said in the movie. They cram a lot of information in there which, if you'd read it, is easy to follow. If not, then it's better just to follow everything being said.

    in summation: I DUNNO MAN

  19. haha it's okie. thanks for trying guys! (:

  20. I'm thinking about taking a popsicle stick and a cut out of the giant squid monster and gluing it onto the popsicle stick. When the scenes that should have the squid in it come up, I'll use it as a puppet in front of me so it looks like it's on screen causing havoc. Will this work James? Y/N?

  21. Y

Paul I think that is the kind of thing I would pay good money for.

  22. Well I plan to see the movie over my Spring break. For those who want to join me in the popsicle stick squid viewing. All are welcome to join.
