Video Games

I thought this would be an interesting topic seeing home BIOSHOCK THE MOVIE is coming out sometime soon and there have been a lot of other video games made into movies recently (do i have to mention DOOM?). So I have two questions and you could do both or either one.

1) What’s your favorite video game and why?
2) What video game should be made into a movie and why?

I adore the SSX series mostly because the graphics have always been good and even though it basically has no plot, but gives you the freedom to move around and do what you like. But hands down, Pac Man should be a movie, because you couldn’t make a better movie than that.

  1. My favorite video games are Zelda: The Ocarina of Time and Zelda: The Majora's Mask.

I've always thought that any Zelda game should be made into a movie. You'd have your main character, Link, on his quest to save the Princess Zelda. That sounds like a good movie to me.

  2. You know you all want to see a live-action film of Pokemon, don't deny it

Sam H - If you haven't seen this yet, check it out. It's fake, but still amazing.

  3. My favorite video game of all time would definately have to be one of the Metal Gear Solid games. Specifically I'd probably have to say Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Now that wouldn't be my top choice for a film adaption. While I think there is potential for them to make a good film based off of MGS (and there is one in the works) I don't find it necessary. Hideo Kojima created a series that does not need to be redone in any other format. Considering MGS4 has 90 minute cutscenes, a movie may be a tiny bit superfluous. Plus, the point of making a movie of a game is to elaborate on things. The last thing MGS needs is to become more intricate.

Now while I agree a gritty, live action, pokemon movie is an idea I have long dreamt of (I've imagined it as a fightclub style atmosphere,) my top choice would have to be a Monkey Island film. The Monkey Island games are a comedic point and click adventure made by Lucasarts based on the exploits of Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate. I can imagine the humor of Monkey Island transfering well into film format.

Beyond that, I would totally show up to audition for a role in a Guitar Hero movie. Not sure which character I could be though. If anyone has an idea of who I would work best for, let me know.

  4. pokemon... taking over the world, one institute at a time.

My favorite video game (don't judge me) is Hot Shots! It's fun and time consuming and the caddy's are hilarious (as are the characters themselves). A close second would be Ready 2 Rumble... getting the chance to be named Afro-Thunder and K.O.ing Michael Jackson? Who would pass that up??
Okay, but really... my favorite real video game is Call of Duty, even though i'm not as good as some of my friends, i am slowly but surely excelling!

Bioshock was my first choice in video-game movies when i first heard about this blog (because as many of you know the school loves to block everything..) so i would definitely say biochock--the phony trailers on youtube look awesome and the game is just so so eerie and creepy that i think it is going to make for a wonderful movie. i can't wait to see it! OooOooOoOh!

  5. I think "Pitfall" would make an excellent movie - sort of like Romancing the Stone and Indiana Jones combined. I always liked this Atari (I know its old) game. Frogger could also be made into a movie by Pixar/Disney - an animated Odyssey for the 21st century!

  7. My favorite video game is Super Mario brothers, which is already a movie.

I think that Medal of Honor would be a fantastic movie. The game already has a story line going which would make is easy to make and interesting to watch. Plus, for some reason the next two months seem popular for WW2 movies.

  10. My Favorite game is most definately Final Fantasy 7, the movie emcopasses memories, emotion, and evil, the best storyline in any game i played except for Bioshock....

Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty, the most kick but movie that will be made!!!

  11. Really Zander? Sons of Liberty? I mean I love the game, and sure "Damn the Patriots!" is probably one of my favorite video game quotes of all time but storywise I wouldn't call it the best of Kojima's work. I think if any of them were to be made into a film it would have to be the original since absolutely every other one (Except three) hinges so much on the events of Shadow Moses.

On a seperate note, what about a Zero Wing movie? Of course all bad translation MUST be kept intact.

  12. Wow. Aside from the fact that the movie for that trailer would be completely backwards, I would definitely go see it, Lauren. It's very "Lord of the Rings"-Esque isn't it?

Anyway, I agree with Sam in that my favorite games are part of the Zelda Series. They're just so timeless. My all-time Favorite is and always will be "Ocarina of Time", but "Twilight Princess" comes pretty close in my book. Its only downfall is that the bosses are way too easy. The "Oh come ON!" moments make the it that much more sweet when you finally beat the game.

Although It would be awesome to see Zelda as a movie, It would probably end up being either one of those movie event thing-a-ma-jiggers like "Tin Man," or having multiple volumes. It would be nigh impossible to fit a movie like that in a three-hour MAX time frame. Also, despite the awesomeness of that trailer, I would be a bit disappointed if the movie came out feeling like "Lord of the Rings." If it doesn't feel like a Zelda, then it didn't achieve its purpose. So, I do think a Zelda movie should be made, but only if it is made right. The reason why one isn't made now is most likely because of the difficulty of a task of that caliper.

  13. I would so agree with Erin on MOH but I’ve played that game WAY TOO MUCH and I’ve seen WAY TOO MANY world war two movies, shows, comic strips, and documentaries to know when they kinda need to stop....

But I would SO see it.

  14. It may be a little outdated but I am pretty sure that the game Chrono Trigger for the super nintendo is the best video game of all time. The plot changes based on decisions that the player makes and the game is also terribly addicting. Compared to its contemporaries (Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Star Fox) it is extremely intuitive and impressive.

As far as movies go, I think that video games should be left as video games and movies should be left as movies. Sure, occassionally there is an ok video game movie or movie video game but usually the results of such excursions are upsettingly mediocre.
