  1. What I found to be one of the bigger surprises out of this is the nomination of District 9 for best picture. Personally I feel it deserves the nod. And while my opinion might be slightly tempered by my love of South Africa, I find it far more deserving of praise then Avatar, the steaming hunk of cinematic doodoo the media informs us is made of Godiva. I'm just wondering what you all think of the nod.

  2. i totally agree with you jon, even if most of the people from my documentary class this morning highly disagree... what do they know? i have given up on the "best picture" category. i feel like it is inevitable. but please, Academy, prove me wrong!
i just think original screenplay and sound editing should go to "Up".

  3. I think Star Trek should have got the nod. It jumped started the Star Trek franchise again. My little 6 year old cousin owns an enterprise ship. I never had interest for Star Trek until I saw the movie. I've become quite a fan since. The film contained many references to Star Trek and even Star Wars, but was something new. While it was nod to classic action and science fiction, the film was a breath of fresh air. The actors stayed true to the original characters while giving them all a contemporary feel. Although there was much action in the film, Star Trek was still driven by the plot and characters.

If anything, J.J. Abrams should have been nominated for best director his work on Star Trek. The film was a beautiful piece of work that integrated CG effects with natural effects. An evident example of this was all the lens flares in the film. They were natural, unpredictable, and beautiful. That's the farthest I'll go into Star Trek because I have much more to say but that's not the topic.

About the "Big Night", please show the international film world that we know a thing or two about film. Otherwise Godard was justified in saying, "I pity the French Cinema because it has no money. I pity the American Cinema because it has no ideas."

  4. Oh yeah, Star Trek doesn't deserve the award just a nod a think, but what happen to all the comedies. Ten nominees and no comedies?

  5. I'm very surprised by "District 9"'s nom. Although I enjoyed it a lot, I'm not sure it's one of my favorites of 2009 (probably because I didn't see it until the DVD was released, after it had been so hyped).
I'm pretty positive "Avatar" won't take the Best Picture. My bet is on "The Hurt Locker," "Inglorious Basterds"(my personal fav.) and "Up."
Bridges is a shoe-in for Best Actor (deservedly) and Bullock will get "Best Actress."
I'm interested in seeing "Precious" for Mo'Nique's performance (even though I love Vera Farmiga and would love to see her take home an award).
& I agree with Armando..."The Hangover" won the GG for 'Best Picture' (musical/comedy) but it's nowhere to be found here?

  6. I would put my money on saying either The Hurt Locker or Avatar or going to win. I'm not saying I support them that's just what will probably happen. I would probably personally support Up, District 9, and Basterds, though I doubt any of them will get it. Also with Best Actor I would say it's also worth considering Morgan Freeman in Invictus. I think he was a perfect choice to play Morgan Freeman.

In short I'm realizing half of my opinions lead back to the fact that South Africa kicks ass. Thank you.

  9. In addition, I'm horrified that we can now say "The Academy Award Nominated Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."
